One Run For Boston recap….I’d do it again in a New York minute!

Since I’ve written about the #OneRunForBoston here and here, I won’t rehash what it’s all about. Just go read it for yourself.

We completed the Oklahoma City stage yesterday morning and there are only a couple of things I want to say:

  • Kate & Danny are two of the coolest freakin’ people on the planet!  If you haven’t signed up for this relay, please do so if only to meet these two incredible people.
  • @KFOR blows monkey nuts for bumping our story!
  • @KSBI probably bumped us too.  I don’t know…and don’t care…because no one watches KSBI!
  • Nick Seymour ran 39 miles yesterday on multiple stages.  He is now my hero.
  • I would do this again in a heartbeat!

Here are a shitload of pictures from yesterday…

Fathers’ Day…veggie burgers…record stores…flaming hot Bloody Mary’s's’!

Happy Fathers’ Day to an awesome dad, mentor, friend, and cool guy!

Jen and I took my dad to S&B Burgers for Fathers’ Day for some veggie burgers and a Bloody Mary made with cucumber vodka that lit us on fire!

I love you dad.

Yogurt with Sandy (yoga to everyone else)

When I started running last year I soon came to realize that the other runners in my group of friends were into multiple sports/disciplines.  Oklahoma City has a world-class riversport center (the Devon Boathouse and Chesapeake Boathouse) that is the official host, or something….I don’t know. I wasn’t paying attention…for the US Olympic rowing teams.

Bicycling is huge within our group.  We have handfuls of triathletes and people who just want a change of pace that comes with cycling.

But I think the largest group are the yoga addicts.  We have some serious yoga addicts in our group and a couple of instructors, or “Yogurts,” as I like to call them…..in my mind!

I just couldn’t get into yoga.  I’m not discounting the difficulty or the benefit.  It’s just for me.  I’ve been a handful of times with my wife so I made that decision after actually trying it.

The thing is, I SO want to like it.  I so want to do it!  But I tend to react more to a calisthenics type exercise.

There’s a studio here that does “hot” yoga but even that doesn’t appeal to me.

For now I’ll just stick to my gym, boot camp, and running.

One of my good friends, Sandy, moved to LA last year.  LA was perfect for her.  Unfortunately, her company was a total piece of shit and she lost her job after only a few weeks there.  This company shall remain nameless…we’ll just call them Matthew Kinney….oh, whoops!

Anyway, that’s neither here nor there.

Sandy is into “yogurt” big time and she posts pics on her Instagram account almost daily.  Oh, and have I mentioned that she’s freakin’ A-MAZ-ING?  She even posts naked pictures!  Actually, she’s nude but you don’t get to see any of the naughty bits.

Damn!

I might get into trouble for this (because I stole some pics) but Sandy loves me and I’ll give her a big hug the next time I see her to smooth things over…..or delete this post if she’s really pissed!

I’ll let you judge for yourself just how awesome she really is……and the last pic is of her friend Kristen.  I stole that pic too and I’ll probably get in trouble but I don’t know her so you better take a peek before she gets pissed and makes me take it down!

70637So what amazes me is the one where Sandy is hanging in the doorway and Kristen doing a one-hand handstand.

This is kind of difficult for a 46 year old fat guy! {insert sarcastic smirk here}

One Run For Boston….and Oklahoma City

I'm guessing this was somewhere in the Texas panhandle.

I’m guessing this was somewhere in the Texas panhandle.

On Tuesday, June 18th, I will take part in a wonderful event called One Run For Boston.  Basically, it’s a massive stage run across the US from LA to Boston.  I first wrote about it here.

Most of the stages are individual runs.  That is, the stage involves one runner who signed up to run the section.  However, up to 25 runners may join that individual.

There are a handful of group stages….

EPIC GROUP STAGES

Oklahoma City, OK – 18th June 2013
St. Louis, MO – 22nd June 2013
Indianapolis Zoo, IN – 23rd June 2013
Columbus, OH – 25th June 2013
Pittsburgh, PA – 26th June 2013
Central Park, NY – 29th June 2013
Massachusetts – 30th June 2013

….I’m participating in the Oklahoma City group stage with (so far) 11 other runners.  The group stages allow up to 300 runners for the stage.

What does this mean?  It means that you have a really great chance to participate.

The great thing about this run is that the Oklahoma section of the run will donate funds raised in the state for the Moore Tur’nada victims as well as the Boston bombing victims.  Oklahoma funds are supporting the Red Cross and Ok Strong.

This will be the first time I’ve participated in something like this.  I usually do various races, marathons, and pub runs, and I train year ’round with a bunch of other runners from Okc.  But this is a little different and I’m really looking forward to it…even though the weather will be hell.  And by hell I mean 86 with 72% humidity!  Yep, Okc was pretty much robbed of spring this year with storms, tur’nadas, and other weather anomalies that made outdoor events pretty freakin’ miserable!

Anyway, head on over to the One Run For Boston website and check out all the cool stuff.  You can order tshirts, run, or just donate!  You can also follow various pictures from the stages here.

They should rename SuperCuts to SuperSuck!

bad-haircutI’ve been getting my hair did at a place called Trichology in Oklahoma City.  My wife used to go there and she had a @Groupon that she couldn’t use so she gave it to me.  Long story short, I ended up with a stylist who is the daughter of a childhood friend!  I love her to death and she does and amazing job.

When I started with her, she was fresh out of the academy.  That means her prices were pretty low.  I think I paid about $22 + tip for a men’s haircut.  I find this reasonable.  She attended a very good hair academy and I think she does a great job.

We’re now several years into this relationship and she has moved up through the ranks…..and so have her prices!

To be fair, it’s not my stylist that’s raising her prices.  It’s the salon.  She works for the salon, not as an independent contractor like a lot of stylists.

The price is now $31….plus a tip!  I’m a pretty straightforward 15%’r so that makes the total $36, and that’s just beyond the price I’m willing to pay for a men’s haircut.

Look, men’s hair isn’t complicated.  It isn’t complex like a woman’s haircut.  I’m not saying it’s simple, but there’s a big difference between a simple man’s cut and a woman’s cut; hence, the big difference in price.

So, off I went to find a new girl. I desperately needed my hair did, so I ran into @Supercuts one afternoon to have get a trim.

I’ve only had two experiences with @Supercuts. Let me rephrase that…I’ve only had two horrible experiences with @Supercuts in the past.  The first time I visited, I got home and my wife told me that back side of my hair was crooked!  Sure enough, the idiot barber (let’s be honest, they’re NOT stylists; they’re barbers!) cut the back of my hair above the neck crooked!

The second time (about 2 weeks ago), it took the guy all of 7 minutes to cut my hair, left it jagged and rough, and I walked out realizing the $15 they charged me wasn’t worth $0.15.

So I’m back at square one and looking for a new stylist.  I thought about going to my wife’s new salon, but I have a feeling I’m just going to get into the same situation again.

Does anyone have a hot aunt who owns a pair of scissors?

Paula Deen is everything that is wrong with this country

This is what you SHOULD be eating! No chemicals, no growth hormones, no GMOs! You can get this every week at your local farmer's market. If you live in Okc, head to Edmond each Saturday April - October.

This is what you SHOULD be eating! No chemicals, no growth hormones, no GMOs! You can get this every week at your local farmer’s market. If you live in Okc, head to Edmond each Saturday April – October.

I shouldn’t have to talk about what’s wrong with our food supply these days.  I think people should be smart enough to do a little research and figure out on their own why GMO’s are bad, why you shouldn’t eat processed foods, why soda is nothing but chemical sludge (that includes diet!), and why you should not eat butter or any dairy products.

But it seems there are two reasons people don’t seem to take any of this seriously: either they know and don’t care or the don’t know.

I would tend to think most people don’t know and a lesser percentage knows, but doesn’t care.

I used to live by that philosophy.  I thought, you only live once so why not completely fuck you body and live happily.

I’m here to tell you that dumping all that processed shit and dairy and fat from my diet hasn’t made me feel like I’m living less of my life one bit.  I just found healthy alternatives.  I eat vegetables and hummus now instead of chips and cheese.  I drink water instead of soda or tea.

Today, I read this article about a new line of butter Paula Deen is manufacturing.  You’d think she would have learned her lesson after the diabetes diagnosis, but I guess stupid will always be stupid….and she’s got loads of it!

Your first clue to the level of shit contained in this product should be that it is sold at WalMart, Walgreens (why would you buy a food product at Walgreens?) and QVC (again, why would you buy a food product from a fucking TV channel?).

Let me give you a little piece of advice: do not buy ANYTHING from WalMart.  If it’s not processed, it’s genetically modified (almost 100% of the corn in this country is genetically modified) or it’s so laden with chemicals the produce is nutritionally void.

The sad part is that she’s on TV and influencing lots of people who have no clue.  They look to people like her to learn.  So she lost 40lbs.  But she’s NOT living a healthy life and the weight loss doesn’t matter if you’re not healthy.  Hell, I can eat a McDonald’s cheeseburger every single day and lose weight if that’s the only thing I eat.  But what will my cholesterol do?  What would my blood pressure do?

Paula Deen is everything that’s wrong with this country: greed and ignorance.

Do me a favor, stop listening to this moron and do a little research into what really is  a healthy lifestyle.

National Running Day: What will YOU do today?

June 5th: It’s National Running Day!

So the question is, are you going to run today?

It doesn’t matter if you run a marathon, a 5k, 1 mile or around the block; just get out and run.

This day has made me think of all the great things that came into my life when I started running.  So I decided to do a little photo story of my favorite things!

Enjoy…..

Meet Walter Murray: Rooster Extraordinaire!

Mark and Angela. Day One...just getting started!

Mark and Angela. Day One…just getting started!

Ahh, the Paseo Arts Festival (@PaseoOKC). Every Memorial Day weekend the Paseo Arts District in Oklahoma City holds an arts festival. Basically, it’s a three day weekend of hippies, good beer, patio dining, pizza, kettle corn, and strange bands no one…and I mean no one….has ever heard of before.

Usually I go with my parents and the wife and we stroll through the artists’ booths and my dad and I have a beer or two.

This year I did none of that…and had the time of my life!

For three freakin’ days, we camped at @SaucedPaseo and ate nothing but pizza (vegetarian for me) and drank nothing but Moose Drool. It was a wonderful three days with some good friends and I can’t wait to do it again next year.

Jen joined me for two of the three days. The third day she volunteered with the cleanup down in Moore. You can read about it here.

But on the second day, she showed up at our patio table with something she purchased at one of the booths. It’s a little…..um, well, I better just post the pics and let you see for yourself!

Meet “Walter Murray!” He watches over the puppies while they’re out playing in the back yard.

Pretty soon I’ll have that pony I always wanted

I ran a lot of miles last year; about 500+ to be exact.  And while that might not seem like a lot to seasoned runners, you have to remember that I didn’t start running until April of last year.

Some weeks ago I was browsing through some blogs and found something really cool: a couple saving a dollar for every mile they ran.

So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  Since I just remembered, I’m starting this as of June 1st.  I’m hoping to save up enough money to buy that pony I’ve always wanted; either that or the Barbie Dream House with the “Fuck Yeah” Corvette!

Since I’ve only run 6 miles in those 4 days, my pot is starting at $6.00!

I’ll start a counter on the left so you can follow the ever exciting progress!
